Thalia

Sustainable and exclusive living on the coast

The Thalia theatre and the adjacent rectory in IJmuiden are getting a new and sustainable life. In the beautiful buildings from 1890, 21 fantastic apartments with at least energy label A ++ are being built. With an area between 43 and 113 m2, there is always an apartment that suits you. Some of the apartments on the ground floor offer the possibility to live life-cycle-proof and the apartments on the upper floors can be reached via the beautiful staircase. Perhaps one of the dressing rooms will be your bedroom or you will soon live in the place of the stage. The shared roof terrace will be a great place to lounge, have a drink and where you will soon meet your neighbors. This is an opportunity not to be missed, in a place with a rich history and with the beach just over 10 minutes by bike.

The transformation
In the theater and the presbytery, 21 apartments will be realized, with the greatest possible preservation of the appearance. Interventions will be made to the exterior, in particular to the façade openings and the roof structure to be realized on the small hall. Characteristic details such as penants, plinth and Art Deco windows on the outside are retained. Approximately 60 solar panels will be installed on the flat roof and the entire building will have excellent insulation facilities. Each apartment will have its own heat pump with wonderful underfloor heating.

The location
Thalia is located in the Breesaapstraat, within walking distance of the harbor and near the center of IJmuiden. For fresh fish you only have to walk to the Halkade, where some catering establishments are also located. Oud-IJmuiden is a district where character and modern living comfort are in balance, because a lot of new construction has been realized in recent years. The result is a vital, atmospheric district where Thaliaplein will soon form the heart. By bike it is about 10 minutes to the Boulevard and the beach.
On the south side of IJmuiden is the National Park Zuid-Kennemerland; a nature reserve where plants, animals and people feel welcome. This beautiful nature reserve extends to Zandvoort, a well-known seaside resort that, like Bloemendaal aan Zee, is well worth a visit.
Haarlem, Amsterdam and various highways are easily accessible via the roads. There is also a regular, fast bus connection (R-net) with Haarlem central and bus 382 provides a direct connection to Amsterdam Station Sloterdijk.

The history
The Thalia theatre is not just a building, but a building with history. Originally this was an Old Catholic church, but the interest of believers was so great that after some time they were forced to build a new church elsewhere in the city. The later theatre became vacant and became a basketry and net fine for the fishing fleet of IJmuiden.
In 1930 the church was converted into a cinema, switching from the Gothic style to that of the Amsterdam School and Art Deco. A nice anecdote is that the films were sometimes interrupted by a loud announcement that a fishing vessel would sail, after which the men left the room, on their way to the sea. After the Second World War, in 1945, Thalia became a 'normal' theatre again, with the understanding that theatre performances were also presented. Louis Bouwmeester and Heintje Davids, among others, have been on stage here.
During part of the 60s the theatre became vacant. Then, after a major renovation, the building was given a second life as a theater where people could party, dance and eat. And now, in 2023, the transformation of a unique and sustainable apartment building will start.
